Understanding Task Statuses

Last updated September 14, 2026  ·  1 min read

A task moves through a fairly specific set of statuses as it goes from assigned to finished; knowing what each one means helps you understand what’s expected next.

The main statuses:

  1. Pending / Not Started: Just created or assigned; waiting on the assignee to acknowledge it.
  2. In Progress: Acknowledged, timer running (or paused).
  3. Paused: Work temporarily stopped, either by the assignee (with a reason) or by the assigner.
  4. Submitted: Handed off for review.
  5. Approved: Signed off by the assigner/Admin/Manager.
  6. Rejected: Sent back with feedback; can be reworked and resubmitted.
  7. Reopened: A previously approved task that’s been reopened for more work.
  8. Abandon Requested / Abandoned: The task is being, or has been, called off entirely (see How to Request to Abandon a Task).

Good to know:

  • An assignee can’t approve or reject their own submitted task that has to come from the assigner, an Admin/Manager, or (in a delegation chain) the appropriate next approver.
