Delegation

Delegating a Task to Someone Else

Last updated September 14, 2026  ·  2 min read

Delegation hands a task to another person but unlike simply reassigning it, the recipient has to accept it before it’s really theirs, and you decide upfront whether their finished work comes back to you first.

To delegate a task:

  1. Open the task. You must have already acknowledged it, and it must be allowed to be transferred (set when the task was created).
  2. Click Delegate.
  3. Choose who to delegate it to; you can’t delegate a task to yourself.
  4. Give a reason for the transfer (required) and any extra detail or notes.
  5. Choose the submission flow: “Submit to me first” (default) or “Submit directly to the original assigner.”
  6. Send the delegation: The recipient sees it as pending until they respond (see How to Accept a Delegation).

Good to know:

  • “Submit to me first” means once the recipient finishes and submits, it comes to you as the next approver; you review and forward it on, rather than it going straight to whoever originally assigned the task.
  • “Submit directly to the original assigner” skips you entirely; after handoff, the recipient’s submission goes straight to the original assigner for approval.
  • You can’t delegate a task that’s already been approved, rejected, or submitted.
  • Delegation isn’t available for every task it depends on whether “allow transfer” was enabled when the task was created.
