Creating & Assigning Tasks
How to Create a Task
Tasks live inside a project and are the main unit of work assigned to people. Creating one with a clear title, requirements, and assignees upfront saves back-and-forth later.
To create a task:
- Open the project the task belongs to, and choose New Task.
- Enter a title (required the short name shown in task lists) and a description (the full context and instructions for the work).
- Optionally add a requirements checklist: individual line items the assignee needs to cover, useful when “done” has more than one part.
- Set the priority (required signals urgency to whoever’s looking at the list) and, if relevant, start and due dates. A task’s due date can’t be later than its project’s own deadline.
- Choose one or more assignees (the people actually responsible for doing the work). A task can be assigned to more than one person at once.
- Optionally add followers (people who just want visibility on updates, without being on the hook for the work itself).
- If needed, decide whether this task can later be delegated/transferred to someone else (see Delegating a Task to Someone Else).
- Save to create the task; assignees are notified automatically.
Good to know:
- A task can optionally have deliverables (sub-items) attached right at creation, useful when the work naturally breaks into a few concrete outputs.
- New tasks start in a pending/not-started state; the assignee still needs to acknowledge it before it counts as actively in progress (see Acknowledging a Task).
