How to Create a Sub-Task
A Sub-Task is a smaller, trackable piece of work nested under a parent Task; for example, a “Social Media Setup” task might have a “Create Accounts and Passwords” sub-task underneath it. Internally, these are called Deliverables, and they can also be created directly under a project without a parent task.
To create a sub-task:
- Open the parent task (the “mother task”) and go to its Sub-Tasks section.
- Click New Sub-Task.
- Enter a title (required) and description of what this specific piece covers.
- Set priority and a start/due date if relevant; the due date can’t be later than the parent task’s own deadline.
- Choose one or more assignees (the people doing this specific piece of work), and optionally followers.
- Optionally add dependencies (other sub-tasks that need to finish first), labels, or tags for organization.
- Decide whether this sub-task can later be delegated to someone else (see Delegating a Sub-Task to Someone Else).
- Save; assignees are notified.
Good to know:
- A sub-task doesn’t have to belong to a task; it can also be created directly under a project (see Submitting a Project Deliverable), skipping the parent-task hierarchy entirely.
- Sub-tasks go through the same lifecycle as regular tasks: acknowledge, work, submit, approve/reject. See Acknowledging a Sub-Task to get started.
